Episode 59: The Complexities of Disclosing Childhood Trauma

Episode Description:

This episode originally aired on YouTube.

There is a lot that goes into choosing when and with whom to share your trauma experience.

There are many ways you can be met by the person you’re sharing with. We all hope, even if we don’t think it will happen, that we’ll be met with understanding, compassion, and support.

Whomever we share with is going to have their own feelings about it. Sometimes they’re angry for you. Sometimes they’re sad. And, sometimes they might be feeling some of those things for themselves.

In today’s episode, I share what might be going on when or if this happens and how to navigate through it, whether you’re the person disclosing or witnessing.

For supporters, I offer insights into how to respond with sensitivity after a disclosure.

What are your thoughts? Have you ever been on either side of disclosure? How did that make you feel?

Episode Notes:

- Disclosure of childhood trauma is a complex process involving significant emotional and psychological considerations.
- It is natural for individuals receiving such disclosures to feel hurt or disappointed, but assumptions about the reasons behind the disclosure should not be taken as absolute truths.
- Survivors often hesitate to disclose due to deeply ingrained fears and beliefs about potential negative consequences.
- Rapid or indiscriminate disclosure, while seeking validation or connection, can sometimes lead to feelings of vulnerability and disappointment.
- Both disclosing and receiving disclosure require understanding and navigating layers of shame, fear, and trust, and seeking professional support may be beneficial for processing the experience.
